ARRL Contest News - The ARRL Contest Advisory Committee (CAC) has
released a white paper, "HF Contesting--Good Practices,
Interpretations and Suggestions." The white paper addresses many
issues that periodically arise related to HF contesting and even some
that may apply to VHF/UHF contesting. The white paper's
interpretations do not supersede the rules for any contest but are
intended to provide interpretations and operating suggestions based
on CAC members' accumulated experience. The intended audience is the
learning and casual contesters that may be unaware of consensus
reached by experienced contesters.
National Contest Journal News (by Carl K9LA, NCJ Editor) - In
addition to the August 2005 NAQP CW and SSB results, the March/April
2006 NCJ has six articles of interest for low band contesters;
VY2ZM's CQWW CW 160 effort, N0AH's 80m/40m array for small backyards,
a discussion of noise problems and solutions in W9XT's CTT&T column,
VP9/N0JK's 160m effort in CQ WPX CW, K3LC's study of the parameters
that affect the resonant frequency of an 80m vertical, and a
discussion of the effect of trees on low band antennas in K9LA's
Propagation column. Rounding out this issue are two product reviews
by K3LR and K9SG. Just as the July/August 2002 issue of NCJ was a
special issue for WRTC2002 in Finland, the July/August 2006 issue
will be a special issue for WRTC2006 in Brazil. If you'd like to

Mike WB8GXB found a simple system from Caswell Plating
(http://www.caswellplating.com/kits/plugnplate.htm) to plate silver
and brass - a product called "Plug-N-Plate". This process consists of
a wall transformer (1.7-volts for silver), a plating wand, gauze to
hold the plating solution, and 4 ounces of plating solution. The
process is: (1) Wrap the gauze around the wand. (2) Plug in the
transformer and connect one output to the part being plated
(alligator clip) and the other output (banana jack) to the wand. (3)
Soak the gauze in plating solution. (4) brush the gauze wand on the
part being plated. A plated finish will result. Coat the entire
surface refreshing the gauze with solution as needed. Buff finish as
desired. That is all there is to it. The part must be cleaned with a
copper/brass cleaner for best results. (Reprinted from the January

When you're trying to sniff out whether a 60 Hz or 120 Hz buzz or
racket is related to the household ac, here's a tip that works with
most oscilloscopes. That rarely used LINE position of the sweep knob
syncs the sweep to the ac voltage supplying the 'scope. If the
offending noise is linked to the line, its waveform will stabilize
instantly! If the 'scope doesn't have a LINE position, try
connecting "EXT SWEEP" or a second vertical channel to the voltage
from a filament transformer's secondary winding. (Thanks, Tod K0TO)

antenna pattern may be interested in an article in the August 2005
issue of IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine. The article "A
MATLAB-Based Two-Dimensional Parabolic Equation Radiowave Propagation
Package" describes a graphic-based version of what TA does. If you
have access to MATLAB and can get a copy of the article, you'll find
it interesting reading. The program not only does terrain effects,
but can model a non-uniform atmosphere for use at VHF+.

In the Public Eye
It was with no little surprise this weekend that after clicking on my
Google News icon and scrolling down the page I saw the ARRL byline on
a news story about SuitSat. (A series of stories have been posted on
the ARRL home page at http://www.arrl.org/.) SuitSat (I like to call
it 'Suitnik') has really caught the eye of the public, if not their
ear since the signal is actually quite weak. Today, once again, the
ARRL byline passed under the eyes of millions of readers and there
are more than 400 news stories about ham radio's latest OSCAR,
designated AO-54 today.
This interest in the drifting suit, soon to flame out in the upper
atmosphere, is part technical and part imagination. After all, the
visual image of a human-like figure adrift in space is one of the
oldest in all of space flight. It sends a shiver down one's spine to
think about being in that suit, with the Earth drawing closer in each
passing hour.
Imagery aside, however, SuitSat has also captured the imagination of
many thousands of students around the world. They are truly
interested in this experiment, in the mechanics of orbits, and in the
ham radio transmitter, gamely sending its message to hams around the
world. How many will have the opportunity to participate in the
School Club Roundup next week?
Here is the magic of radio! The interface between technology and the
natural world is a place of continuous discovery. This is where
scientists and engineers are born! Not because it is "good for
society" or because it's a useful career, but because it has spark,
it's open-ended, there is no book of canned answers to be
regurgitated, and it's real!
In 1959, Sputnik jump-started a generation on the path to the Moon,
the integrated circuit, and the Internet. I remember being carried

sky with all the neighbors, straining to see the tiny point of light
moving through the stars. I rather doubt that SuitSat's excitement
will have the same galvanic effect on as many people, but all around
the world young eyes and ears are on a tiny transmitter adrift in a
spacesuit far above the world.
